North Edinburgh Arts offers local residents a place to relax, explore, learn, meet, share, volunteer and have fun in. Last year over 30,000 visits were made to the venue that ‘floats like a bright bubble behind the Muirhouse shopping centre‘ (STV Local)
Over 17 hours of creative workshops are on offer each week, most with a family focus, alongside a wide range of other events from singing groups, to dance shows, circus skills workshops, community theatre to film clubs. The venue is also home to Licketyspit Theatre Company and Muirhouse Youth Development Group, both reaching out to the most disadvantaged children and families in the area.
Our award winning venue incorporates two studios, a 96 seat theatre, recording studio, gallery, offices and a café with children’s play area leading onto a large garden. NEA offers a safe, comfortable and creative space for people of all ages to develop within, in what can otherwise be a harsh physical and social environment.
In the spring of 2014 a major grant from the Big Lottery Fund allowed us to create our own magic garden; a place to create, recycle, try out new ideas, grow, read, rest and play. Tying in with the major physical redevelopment soon to happen in the square mile around the venue we will make sure NEA is at the centre of a happy, healthy, creative, inspired and inspiring community.
As it says on the path to our door Art is: Breaking down barriers; transformation, growth; freedom of thought.
NEA is a registered Scottish charity and is run by a small team working with freelance artists and managed by a Board of Directors.
Through partnership working and ongoing local and city consultation the award-winning centre, opened in 2002 acts as the cultural centre of the community, providing a safe, enjoyable and creative environment for people of all ages to relax and develop within.
