George Square is Assembly’s main hub, made up of three mini hubs if you will; the Gardens, the Studios and George Square Theatre. Assembly George Square Gardens house our Spiegeltent Palais du Variété, the Piccolo Tent and a selection of street food vendors and bars.
We are based in Edinburgh all year at Assembly Roxy, run Assembly Festival at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (we are the longest running of the multi-venue operators) and tour with the best of our programme. Throughout the year, we host theatre, music, comedy and events year-round in the beautiful Assembly Roxy in the heart of the Old Town, and as an example of our previous credits in 2013 we premiered Nirbhaya at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and we have since toured to London’s Southbank Centre and to New York, Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore in India. In short, we bring the best talent in the world to Edinburgh.
Our twenty three temporary theatre venues and ten ancillary bars that we will be running for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for 2017 are jam-packed with actors, dancers, comedians, musicians and audiences from around the world. Assembly has built an unsurpassed international recognition through the quality of its artistic programming. Our reputation for excellence stems from the ambition to provide the very best performances, experiences and visitor interactions in top quality, temporary venues. Our 2017 programme consists of over 200 shows from six continents, including comedy talent such as David O’Doherty, Andrew Maxwell and Jason Byrne, the best in International performance to Edinburgh and this year will be hosting seasons of work from Korea, South Africa and New Zealand amongst others including worldwide theatre hit Mies Julie, Total Theatre award winning International smash Hot Brown Honey and working with the best of Scottish established and new theatre, including the winners of our exciting new award the A.R.T. award giving new writing a chance to develop, rehearse and run a supported season at the Roxy. The iconic Assembly venues undoubtedly represent destination spaces for artists, promoters, producers and Festival goers alike.
To top it all off our George Square Spiegel Garden is widely recognised as the hub of the Fringe – achieving footfalls of 25,000+ at weekends and 350,000+ across the Festival. The main entrance of Assembly George Square Spiegel Gardens and the main Assembly Box Office achieves footfall of 750,000+ across the Festival. In 2017 we will also present shows from the Edinburgh International Jazz and Blues Festival as well as the Edinburgh Food Festival.
